Former Nigerian Air Force Spokesperson Captain Sadeeq Shehu has noted a significant discrepancy between the Senate’s position and the new Chief of Army Staff’s recommendation regarding military recruitment numbers.
Speaking in an interview with Arise TV from 9:05, Captain Shehu highlighted the divergent views on troop expansion. “The Senate is saying add 100,000 to the Army troops, the chief of army staff is saying add 240,000,” he said.
The former Air Force spokesperson however noted that determining appropriate recruitment levels requires comprehensive analysis of multiple factors. “Now, I think it is premature, without a proper analysis, to even know what the forces that we need are. When you want to shape a force for a country, there are certain factors that you look at. First, you look at the threat and mission. Do we have internal threats? Do you have an external threat? That will decide the size of armed forces that you want,” he stated.
The retired military officer also identified financial constraints as a critical consideration in military expansion decisions.
He noted that to avoid economic dilemma, the government must carefully allocate limited resources between defense spending and essential civilian services including healthcare and education. View, More,
