The Convener of the Katsina Security Community Initiative, Dr. Bashir Kurfi has raised concerns over a fresh wave of attacks on farmlands in Katsina State.
Speaking during an interview on Trust TV from 10:20, Dr. Kurfi said he received reports indicating that bandits have now resorted to openly grazing their cattle on farmlands, destroying crops and worsening the hardship already faced by rural communities.
According to him, the latest development shows a troubling shift in the activities of the criminals, who are now targeting sources of livelihood in addition to carrying out attacks and kidnappings. He explained that the destruction of farmlands could deepen food insecurity in the region if urgent steps are not taken to address the situation.
Sharing the disturbing information he received, Dr. Kurfi said, “The story reaching me today is that since last week, the bandits were going around the farm with their cows eating up everything.” He noted that the bandits appeared emboldened, moving freely across communities without fear of resistance or confrontation.
Dr. Kurfi added that the deliberate destruction of crops is not only an attack on the individual farmers but a direct threat to the state’s food supply. He urged security agencies to intensify patrols in rural areas and protect farmers who are now afraid to access their lands.
He further stressed that local communities must be empowered to support security efforts, emphasizing the importance of cooperation between residents, vigilante groups, and formal security forces. According to him, ignoring attacks on food production could lead to more severe economic consequences for the state and the country at large. View, More,
