According to a report by Punch on Friday, November 14, 2025, Aloy Ejimakor, special counsel to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has reacted to the recognition bestowed on the separatist leader by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS). The reaction came in a statement shared on Ejimakor’s official X handle on Friday, November 14, 2025.
In the post, Ejimakor announced that Nnamdi Kanu had been honoured with the prestigious Freedom Fighter award by NANS, describing the recognition as both symbolic and significant. According to him, the award reflects the continued relevance of Kanu’s struggle and the resonance his agitation still holds among young Nigerians, particularly students who see him as a symbol of resistance and activism.
Ejimakor expressed profound appreciation to the leadership of NANS for acknowledging Kanu at a time when he remains in detention and faces an ongoing legal battle with the Nigerian government. He applauded the association for demonstrating what he described as courage and clarity of purpose in recognising individuals who have contributed to social and political advocacy, regardless of their circumstances.
“Congratulations to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu as he bags the prestigious ‘Freedom Fighter’ award from the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS). Appreciation to NANS and its cerebral and courageous president, Comrade Atiku Isah,” Ejimakor wrote.
The award, according to Ejimakor, is not just a recognition of Kanu’s efforts but also a reaffirmation of the widespread belief among many Nigerians that his activism has brought national attention to issues of marginalisation, governance, and human rights. He noted that NANS’ gesture speaks volumes about the association’s willingness to acknowledge voices that challenge the status quo.
According to Aloy Ejimakor on X,
Ejimakor further emphasised that the recognition would strengthen ongoing calls for Kanu’s release and encourage advocates who have consistently demanded a fair judicial process. He maintained that the award serves as an important reminder that Kanu’s message continues to inspire individuals across different segments of society, despite the restrictions placed on him.
The lawyer concluded by reiterating his confidence that justice would ultimately prevail. He expressed optimism that honours such as the NANS award would continue to shed light on Kanu’s case and reinforce demands for lawful and equitable treatment. View, More,
