A public affairs analyst has condemned calls by the Supreme Council for Sharia in Nigeria for President Bola Tinubu to remove newly appointed INEC Chairman Professor Joash Amupitan over a 2020 report he authored on alleged Christian persecution.

Dr. Majeed Dahiru during an interview with Nigerian Info FM from 8:46 questioned the legitimacy of the organization itself. “I don’t know why we have a group called Supreme Council for Sharia in Nigeria, that group should be disbanded. The statements from that group have been irrational, provocative, as if somebody wants to plunge Nigeria into a sectarian warfare,” he stated.

The analyst characterized the demand for Amupitan’s dismissal as fundamentally unreasonable and counterproductive to interfaith relations. “When Muslims like us are trying to reflect the beauty of Islam, the peace that Islam is, the humanity that is at the core of Islam through our words, our writings, and our conduct, groups like this will come out and make nonsense of our efforts,” Dahiru explained.

Dr. Dahiru questioned the constitutional basis for the Supreme Council for Sharia’s existence and its funding from public resources. He argued that such an organization should not operate in Nigeria, particularly because it receives financial support from the national treasury and it has failed to foster national unity through it writings.
