In a recent interview on Inside Sources on Channels Television from 16:49, global affairs analyst Adamu Garba praised the Nigerian military, emphasizing its extensive operational experience in the Sahel region, which he says exceeds that of the United States military in certain areas. He highlighted the critical role of Nigerian forces in maintaining regional security and their capacity to handle domestic threats effectively.
According to him, “Our military has much more experience fighting in the Sahel than the U.S. military,” noting the army’s long-standing counterinsurgency operations against Boko Haram, bandits, and other armed groups across northern Nigeria and neighboring countries. Garba pointed out that Nigerian forces have also been deployed in regional interventions, including Liberia and Sierra Leone, where their expertise was relied upon to stabilize conflict zones.
He stressed that this experience gives Nigeria a significant advantage in addressing its own security challenges. While foreign assistance can be beneficial in intelligence and logistics, Garba argued that Nigeria should primarily rely on its own military to reclaim areas affected by insurgency and criminal activity. He emphasized that the armed forces, when given operational freedom and political backing, have consistently shown the ability to neutralize threats and restore order.
Garba also cautioned against overreliance on negotiation with armed groups, stating that such approaches could embolden insurgents rather than diminish their activities. He urged political leaders to fully support the military, giving them the mandate and resources necessary to tackle insecurity decisively.
He concluded by calling on Nigerians to recognize and trust the capabilities of their military, stressing that national security is achievable if the forces are empowered and unified behind clear directives. “We have the men, the experience, and the knowledge; now we need the political will to act,” he said.
