Security strategist Dr. David Okoror has revisited an episode in Nigeria’s recent history, drawing attention to the country’s persistent security challenges.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, Dr. Okoror recalled how insurgents once shot down a military fighter jet in Zamfara State during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

“In Zamfara State, Some years back, they shot down a military fighter jet during the government of Buhari,” Okoror said, stressing that the incident exposed deep-rooted weaknesses in Nigeria’s security framework.

He described the attack as “a dangerous symbol of how emboldened non-state actors had become,” noting that it reflected the alarming sophistication of armed groups operating across the country. According to him, such incidents should have served as a wake-up call for a comprehensive overhaul of Nigeria’s defense and intelligence systems.

Dr. Okoror lamented that despite heavy budgetary allocations to the defense sector, insecurity remains widespread, with communities across the North still living under constant threat from bandits and insurgents. “When criminals can bring down a military aircraft, it signals a complete breakdown in intelligence and operational control,” he warned.

The security strategist urged the current administration to learn from past lapses and prioritize intelligence-led operations over reactionary force. He also called for stronger coordination between the military, police, and local vigilante networks to ensure proactive threat detection and response. View, More,
