The immediate past Chief Justice of Nigeria and current Chairman of the Body of Benchers, Olukayode Ariwoola, GCON, told The Punch about his journey through the judiciary, life beyond the robes, and his views on the state of justice in Nigeria.
When he was asked about the role of faith or spirituality in his life, he said that the greatest thing was to continue to love God, because if one loves Him, He loves them in return. He clarified that he was not a religionist.
He explained that he is a Muslim from a Muslim background, while his wife is a Christian. He noted that she knew his parents were Muslims and had died as Muslims, and he had always known her as a Christian.
He recalled that in the past, he used to stand outside her compound during Christmas and Easter celebrations. He mentioned that her father initially did not approve, but ultimately had no choice.
He said, “I am a Muslim from a Muslim background, but my wife is a Christian. She knew my parents were Muslims and died as Muslims, and I have always known her as a Christian; she has always been one.
“I remember I used to go and stand outside her compound during Christmas and Easter celebrations in those days. Her father initially didn’t like it, but he had no choice.”
He added that one should love God because He cares and loves in return, is faithful, and overlooks human mistakes. He referred to the saying that one should not look down on anyone except to admire their shoes. He concluded by saying that God loves him so much, and therefore, he should love God in return.
