Former Managing Director of The Guardian Newspapers, Martins Oloja has condemned the brutal killing of Deborah Samuel, the Sokoto college student murdered in 2022 over alleged blasphemy.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television from 3:30, Oloja said the incident remains one of the darkest moments in Nigeria’s recent history, symbolizing the dangers of religious intolerance and mob justice.

“What happened to Deborah who thanked God online for enabling her to finish her exam as any Christian would have done? They stoned her to death in this same country,” Oloja said, expressing deep frustration over the continued lack of accountability for her murder.

Deborah Samuel, a 200-level student of Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto, was lynched by a mob after she reportedly posted a message of gratitude to God on a class WhatsApp group. Oloja described her killing as “a national tragedy that should have provoked lasting reforms in law enforcement and interfaith relations.”

He lamented that despite widespread outrage, justice has not been served, and the culture of impunity around religious violence continues to thrive. “We cannot claim to be a nation under the rule of law while such barbarity goes unpunished,” he said.

Oloja urged religious and political leaders to confront extremism with sincerity and courage, stressing that no faith condones the taking of life under any circumstance. He also called on security agencies to reopen investigations and ensure those responsible for Deborah’s death face justice. View, More,
