Minister of Solid Minerals Dele Alake has stated that many Nigerians are unaware that perpetrators of the Owo church massacre have been arrested and are facing prosecution.
Speaking during a press conference covered by Channels TV from 5:52, Alake highlighted progress in prosecuting those responsible for attacks on religious worshippers. “How many people know or are aware that the terrible attack on a church in Owo some years back before this administration—if you recall where worshippers were killed right inside the church—those marauders have been apprehended and are facing prosecution?”
The Minister noted that criminals involved in the Yelwata killings have also been apprehended and are facing prosecution.
The minister argued that these arrests demonstrate government commitment to security. “There is an eloquent testimony to the fact that government is alive to its responsibilities and is not shirking any duties of protecting lives and properties. So it’s important for us as purveyors of information, as I said, to be circumspect when it comes to reporting of sensitive issues because you need a peaceful, stable country to be able to practice whichever profession, especially journalism,” he stated.
Alake called on media professionals and information disseminators to exercise caution when reporting on sensitive security matters.
He emphasized that accurate reporting is essential not only for public awareness but also for maintaining the peaceful and stable environment necessary for journalists and other professionals to operate effectively.
