In a recent interview on News Central TV 26:53, Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi warned that continued threats from U.S. President Donald Trump could prompt Nigeria to reconsider its international alliances. He suggested that if the United States does not withdraw its warnings and pressures, Nigeria may pivot toward nations like China, Russia, or other members of the BRICS bloc for political and strategic support.

Quoting his own words, he said, “We will change our political direction to other nations like China, Russia, or the BRICS.” Gumi criticized the U.S. for its recent statements regarding Nigeria’s security situation, arguing that such threats are unhelpful and risk inflaming tensions between Muslims and Christians.

The cleric emphasized that the ongoing violence in Plateau, Benue, and Southern Kaduna is largely driven by land disputes and communal conflicts, not religious persecution. He noted that both Muslims and Christians have suffered casualties and that foreign intervention should not politicize or misrepresent the situation.

Gumi highlighted the importance of Nigeria asserting its sovereignty by seeking partnerships with nations that respect its internal affairs. He argued that alliances with countries like China, Russia, or the BRICS would provide strategic support without threatening the country’s stability.

He also encouraged continued local peace initiatives, dialogue between communities, and the rehabilitation of repentant fighters as practical approaches to tackling insecurity. According to Gumi, homegrown solutions are far more effective than external pressures that risk deepening divisions.
