According to a report by Daily Post on Monday, November 3, 2025, Daniel Bwala, the spokesman to President Bola Tinubu, has said that the allegation of genocide against Christians in Nigeria was initiated by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in 2016.

He made this known during an interview on TVC’s Your View programme, where he addressed recent claims about religious persecution in the country.

Bwala stated that the narrative about genocide was first circulated by IPOB several years ago, describing it as a deliberate attempt to mislead the international community.

He explained that the group created and promoted the story to attract sympathy and political support from foreign nations, especially from Western countries.

The presidential aide pointed out that this misinformation gained more attention after United States President Donald Trump designated Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” due to alleged attacks on Christians.

He said the development was largely influenced by the earlier reports pushed by IPOB, which portrayed Nigeria as a country that encourages religious killings.

Bwala noted that the federal government has continued to challenge such claims and present facts to counter the misinformation.

According to him, the government has always maintained that Nigeria’s security challenges are not based on religion but on other complex issues such as terrorism, banditry, and communal conflicts that affect both Muslims and Christians alike.

He emphasized that the administration of President Bola Tinubu is committed to protecting all citizens regardless of their faith or ethnicity.

He added that the government is working with security agencies and community leaders across the country to ensure peace and stability, while also addressing the root causes of insecurity.

The presidential spokesman urged Nigerians to be cautious about information shared on social media and to verify facts before believing or spreading them.

He said false reports about genocide or religious persecution can damage the country’s image and create unnecessary fear and division among citizens.

Bwala also called on the international community to rely on verified data and credible information when assessing Nigeria’s human rights and religious freedom records.

He maintained that the government remains open to constructive dialogue and cooperation with global partners to strengthen national unity and promote peaceful coexistence among all religious groups in the country.

Bwala said: “Since that IPOB started this thing as far back as 2016, amplifying the false narrative that there is a genocide against the Christians in Nigeria. View, More,
