Former lawmaker and political analyst, Cletus Obun, has dismissed claims about illegal activities being carried out within Nigeria’s forest reserves, saying such assumptions are exaggerated and unrealistic.
Speaking during an interview on Trust TV from 25:45, Obun emphasized that unlike other parts of Africa where forests have been largely depleted, Nigeria still retains ancient and untouched forest areas.
He explained that while vast regions across East Africa have been converted into farmlands and secondary forests, Nigeria still boasts dense and impenetrable forests that have existed for centuries. According to him, these natural habitats remain almost inaccessible and are home to towering trees that have stood since ancient times.
In his words: “As I fly across Africa — I was just coming from East Africa last week — I found no forest anywhere. It’s a patchwork of land and cultivated areas, mostly secondary forests. But we have a forest that has existed since the time of Adam, where an iroko tree can be up to a thousand meters wide, with mahogany trees and others. When you fly over it, you can’t see anything below; nobody has farmed there, and it’s almost inaccessible. We still have that in my place. So, where is the forest you are talking about — that people are carrying 200 motorbikes in? Are they flies? Even flies can be seen under a microscope.” View, More,
