In a recent video on Channels Television from 05:58, Retired General Anthony Atolagbe has lauded President Bola Tinubu’s decision to appoint new Service Chiefs, saying the choices reflect professionalism, merit, and adherence to proper military career structures.
Speaking on the new appointments, Atolagbe highlighted that the selections demonstrate a deliberate effort to maintain balance and integrity in the hierarchy of command. “To the best of my understanding, look at it — the Chief of Defence Staff is an infantry officer, the Chief of Army Staff is an armoured officer,” he noted.
According to the retired General, this alignment follows the natural structure of military career progression and eliminates the unhealthy culture of favoritism and political interference that had previously affected postings and promotions. “This aligns with proper military career steps that are being taken,” he said. “Not just bringing people to come and serve because of lobbying and the rest of it.”
Atolagbe stressed that appointing officers based on competence and operational experience will strengthen the armed forces and promote discipline within the ranks. “It is a reflection of professionalism and fairness,” he added, noting that it sends a clear message that merit, not influence, determines leadership in the current administration.
He further stated that the new leadership combination — with one officer grounded in infantry operations and another in armoured warfare — brings complementary expertise crucial for Nigeria’s ongoing fight against insurgency, banditry, and terrorism.
President Tinubu, on Friday, dismissed General Christopher Musa and other Service Chiefs, appointing new heads of the Army, Navy, and Air Force. The decision, widely described as one of the President’s boldest moves yet, is expected to usher in a new era of reform and renewed confidence in Nigeria’s military command. View, More,
