Civil rights activist and legal practitioner, Mr. Dele Farotimi, has strongly criticized the Nigerian government for what he described as blatant double standards in its handling of peaceful protesters versus armed groups.

Speaking on Channels Television on Tuesday from 2:52, October 21, 2025, Farotimi reacted to the police’s use of tear gas against demonstrators who participated in the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest led by activist Omoyele Sowore in Abuja on Monday.

According to him, it was hypocritical that peaceful protesters demanding the release of the detained IPOB leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, were violently dispersed, while terrorists and bandits continue to operate openly without consequence. “Those who were protesting for the freedom of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu were seriously assaulted and tear-gassed in full glare of everybody just yesterday,” Farotimi said.

He further explained: “Meanwhile, in this same blessed country, terrorists—euphemistically referred to as bandits—are rioting and trooping in full glare of TV cameras, granting interviews and laying down conditions for peace to a state that is complicit in the mess that has overtaken it.”

He lamented that the government continues to suppress peaceful dissent while tolerating violent actors who have killed and displaced thousands. “You have real terrorists who have borne arms, killed multiple persons, completely unrepentant, walking around free. But a man who has carried the genuine grievance of his people is in detention,” he argued. “You may not like his methods—that’s a different ballgame. But how do you complain about his methods when you are morally coddling even worse?,” he added. See, More, Here>>>
