As the world marks the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, Peter Obi has reminded Nigerians of the alarming poverty levels in the country. In a post shared on his verified X account, the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party described poverty as a daily reality for millions of citizens, lamenting that Nigeria remains the country with the highest number of people living in poverty globally.
Peter Obi referred to recent World Bank reports showing that over 139 million Nigerians now live in poverty, representing more than half of the nation’s total population. He said the figure reflects years of failed leadership, misplaced priorities, corruption, and the absence of compassionate governance.
Calling on leaders at all levels to act urgently, Obi emphasized that poverty eradication must become the core of Nigeria’s governance agenda. He said the nation must invest in human capital through education, healthcare, job creation, and support for small businesses to sustainably lift citizens out of poverty.
Peter Obi further urged the nigerian government to restore productivity, reduce waste, and cut the cost of governance, stressing that true national progress is not measured by the wealth of a few but by the well-being of all citizens.
“According to recent World Bank reports, over 139 million Nigerians now live in poverty, a figure that shockingly represents more than half of our total population, reflecting not only deep economic hardship but also years of failed leadership, misplaced priorities, systemic corruption, policy failures, and an absence of compassionate governance.” See, More, Here>>>
