Former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, has revisited one of the most intense moments of his political career, detailing a tense exchange he had with former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Pius Anyim, during the fallout of the 2013 Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF) election.

In a video shared by The Guardian Nigeria from 2:27, Amaechi explained that after winning his re-election as NGF chairman, he sought an opportunity to meet with the president to clarify misunderstandings surrounding the election. However, the effort, he said, was met with resistance.

According to him, “I told Pius Anyim, ‘I want to see the president.’ He said, ‘Go and resign if you want to see the president.’” Amaechi said he was shocked by the response but chose not to yield, insisting that resigning would mean betraying the confidence of the governors who had re-elected him.

He added that the situation reflected how strained his relationship with the presidency had become following the election. Despite the tension, he maintained that he did nothing wrong and that his victory was the result of a free and fair process among his colleagues.

Amaechi also stated that he was prepared for the political consequences that followed, stressing that leadership requires standing firm even when it comes at a personal cost.

The former governor described the episode as a turning point that revealed the depth of political intolerance at the time, adding that it strengthened his resolve to remain steadfast in his principles and commitment to accountability in governance. See, More, Here>>>
