Niger State Governor, Umar Bago, has called for an end to the traditional salary payment structure in Nigeria, urging a shift to a productivity-driven wage system. He made this known while speaking on the need to revolutionize labor practices and agriculture in the country.

According to a video from 0:22 shared by News Central TV on Friday, October 17, 2025, Governor Bago emphasized that weekly wage payments would enhance productivity and motivate workers to perform better.

“The regime of salary payment in Nigeria must also be put behind. It must be paid on wages, wage bill, weekly. It will increase productivity,” he said. “It will give room for people to want to work. Because if you don’t work, you can’t get wage,” he added.

The governor criticized the ongoing debate about the proposed national minimum wage, describing the figures as insufficient when compared to the cost of living. “They say minimum wage 80,000, 70,000, and people are excited. How much is that in dollars?” he asked.

Bago went on to cite his personal experience in agricultural management, revealing that his farm operations serve as a model for youth employment and empowerment: “On my farms, I pay graduate assistant 500,000 Naira,” he stated. “Build farm communities in farm estates. The other land will be used and be cleared and be partitioned based on needs and capacity to people who live there.”

He further explained that those living within the farm communities would also work there, promoting both employment and food security. “The inhabitants of those areas will still work in those farms, but they will live in farm estates. We must promote the development of farm estates,” the governor added. See, More, Here>>>
