Many people believe that sleeping is one of the safest times for the body because the body rests and recovers. However, serious medical conditions can sometimes cause a person to die while sleeping. In some cases, the person may have had an underlying health problem without obvious symptoms.
Here are three major medical reasons why people may die in their sleep.
1. Sudden Cardiac Arrest
Sudden cardiac arrest occurs when the heart unexpectedly stops pumping blood effectively. It can result from an abnormal heart rhythm or an underlying heart condition. When the heart stops pumping, oxygen can no longer reach the brain and other vital organs, making immediate emergency treatment essential.
2. A Stroke
A stroke happens when blood flow to part of the brain is interrupted or when a blood vessel in the brain ruptures. Severe strokes can be life-threatening, and some may occur while a person is asleep. High blood pressure, smoking, diabetes, and certain heart conditions can increase the risk of stroke.
3. Severe Breathing Problems During Sleep
Some medical conditions can interfere with breathing during sleep. For example, obstructive sleep apnoea causes repeated pauses in breathing when the upper airway becomes blocked. It is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular problems, although most people with sleep apnoea do not die suddenly in their sleep. Other serious conditions, including severe lung disease, can also cause dangerous breathing difficulties.
