Popular Nollywood actor and politician, Kenneth Okonkwo, has reacted to reports that Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

In a post shared online, Okonkwo explained that by resigning from the PDP without joining another political party, Governor Diri has automatically lost his position as the Governor of Bayelsa State.

He referred to Section 177(c) of the 1999 Constitution, which states that every elected member of government must belong to a political party. According to him, while an elected official can defect from one party to another, no leader is allowed to be partyless at any time.

Okonkwo also called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to declare Diri’s seat vacant and organize a new governorship election in Bayelsa State within 90 days.

The post generated lots of reactions on Instagram. While some were totally in support of the actor, some expressed their disappointment over how laws are being ignored in Nigeria and others were totally not in support of Kenneth Okonkwo’s opinion.
