In a recent statement via his official X account, Chidi Odinkalu, a respected law professor and former Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, has reacted to a recent incident involving Nigeria’s Minister of Works, David Umahi.
The drama unfolded during a live TV interview on Arise News, where broadcaster Rufai Oseni questioned Umahi’s claim of being a professor.
During the interview, Umahi referred to himself as a “professor in engineering.” Rufai quickly asked, “Since when?” In response, Umahi shifted his words and said, “I mean in practice.”
The exchange brought wide attention on social media, with many Nigerians weighing in on the minister’s credentials.
Many pointed out that the title “professor” should only be used by those who have been officially conferred with the academic rank by a recognized university.
Reacting to the incident, Chidi Odinkalu posted a photo of David Umahi in a graduation gown with a satirical caption.
The image labeled Umahi as “The first Construction Professor in the world at the University of Lagos-Calabar coastal Highway,” referencing the controversial highway project he is overseeing.
”Congratulations, @realdaveumahi!” Odinkalu wrote.
The post quickly went viral and was seen as a sarcastic jab at Umahi’s self-description.
Many Nigerians found Odinkalu’s response humorous, while others expressed concern about public officials claiming titles they may not officially hold. See, More, Here>>>
