According to a report by The Times of Israel, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced that a prominent Hezbollah operative was killed in a drone strike in southern Lebanon earlier today. The strike targeted a vehicle in Zebdine, on the outskirts of Nabatieh, resulting in the death of Hassan Atwi and his wife.

Atwi was identified by the IDF as a key figure within Hezbollah’s air defense array. The military described him as a “significant source of knowledge” for the group, responsible for leading efforts to rebuild infrastructure and procure equipment for the air defense network. The IDF further stated that Atwi maintained contacts with Iranian officials who supplied Hezbollah with air defense systems.

Lebanese media reports indicate that Atwi had been blind following Israel’s so-called pager attack last year, which targeted Hezbollah members. Despite his condition, the IDF said Atwi remained active in coordinating and advancing Hezbollah’s air defense capabilities.

The military emphasized that Atwi’s activities “constituted a violation of the understandings between Israel and Lebanon.” The IDF described the operation as a substantial blow to Hezbollah’s attempts to re-establish its military infrastructure in the region.

The strike forms part of ongoing Israeli operations targeting Hezbollah operatives and infrastructure in southern Lebanon. The IDF has regularly stated that such actions aim to prevent the group from enhancing its military capabilities, particularly in the field of air defense.

Hassan Atwi’s death highlights the continued tension between Israel and Hezbollah, as both sides have maintained heightened vigilance along the northern border. The IDF’s statement framed the operation as necessary to counter threats posed by Hezbollah’s air defense network and to uphold Israel’s security measures in the region.

The killing of Atwi and his wife marks the latest in a series of targeted strikes against Hezbollah personnel, which Israeli authorities say are intended to disrupt the group’s operational and logistical capabilities. According to the IDF, the elimination of key operatives like Atwi undermines Hezbollah’s ability to rebuild and maintain its military infrastructure. See, More, Here>>>
