According to a report by The Times Of Israel, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Aaty has said that the issue of Hamas surrendering its weapons “must be addressed within a Palestinian framework,” emphasizing that any long-term solution for Gaza must come from internal Palestinian dialogue.
Speaking in an interview with the Saudi newspaper Asharq al-Awsat, Abdel Aaty expressed hope that, following a transitional phase, the Palestinian Authority’s (PA) security forces would take control of Gaza. He described this as part of a broader “political horizon” that could eventually lead to the creation of an independent Palestinian state.
“The handing over of Hamas’s weapons is an issue that must be addressed within a Palestinian framework,” he reiterated, signaling Cairo’s position that reconciliation and unity among Palestinian factions are essential for lasting stability.
Abdel Aaty further explained that Egypt is working to define the scope of authority for the international force expected to deploy in Gaza under the peace plan backed by US President Donald Trump. This force, he noted, would initially help maintain security and support humanitarian efforts during the transitional period.
According to Abdel Aaty, Egypt also believes that the same international force should later extend its mandate to the West Bank. This move, he said, would be crucial for linking Gaza and the West Bank under a unified Palestinian administrative and security structure, ultimately strengthening the Palestinian Authority’s role across both territories.
Egypt has long served as a mediator in Israeli-Palestinian negotiations and continues to push for a comprehensive framework that includes security reform, political unity, and economic recovery. Abdel Aaty’s comments highlight Cairo’s ongoing efforts to balance regional diplomacy with its commitment to Palestinian statehood and internal stability. See, More, Here>>>
