In a recent video shared on Daily Trust TV from 2:08, fresh details have emerged over the controversial killing of four persons, including two students, allegedly by soldiers in Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State.
Eyewitnesses said the incident followed the burial of a traditional ruler in Turan community. Soldiers reportedly intercepted mourners on their way back and demanded money before offering security escort. When their request was rejected, the confrontation allegedly escalated into gunfire, leaving two students and two youths dead, while many others sustained gunshot wounds.
Cletus Iorkyaa, President of the Turan Development Association, revealed that the soldiers initially made a huge demand from the grieving family. According to him: “The soldiers requested N1 million, so we offered them about N450,000, but they said no.” He explained that when youths volunteered to provide security instead, the soldiers later opened fire on the returning mourners.
The killings have sparked outrage, with women in Jatoka taking to the streets in protest, demanding immediate justice. Many community members accused the soldiers of abandoning their duty to fight bandits in the forests, while turning their guns on innocent villagers.
Local leaders have also joined the call for accountability, insisting on the withdrawal of military personnel from the area and their replacement with more mobile policemen. Residents argue that soldiers are not trained to live within communities and should instead return to their barracks.
The Deputy Commissioner of Police in Benue has appealed for calm, promising that investigations are ongoing. But anger remains high as protesters insist that those responsible for the killings must be brought to book.
For now, the demand from Turan is clear: justice for the dead, and an end to what they describe as military intimidation in their community. See, More, Here>>>
