In a recent statement via his official X account, Professor Chidi Anselm Odinkalu, a well-known human rights lawyer and former Chairman of Nigeria’s National Human Rights Commission, has expressed his concerns about the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

He addressed INEC’s plan to come up with 142 recommendations aimed at improving the nation’s electoral process.

The Commission also disclosed that four major elections would hold before the next general election in 2027.

This announcement was made by INEC Chairman Prof Mahmood Yakubu.

He spoke in Lagos at the induction of 10 newly appointed Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs).

Professor Odinkalu voiced his doubt regarding the effectiveness of these recommendations.

Mahmood Yakubu, under whom card-carry @OfficialAPCNg members have filled the ranks of @inecnigeria Commissioners at both national & state levels, is distracting us with ‘recommendations for improved electoral process.’ Dude thinks this is Nollywood?” Odinkalu wrote.

Odinkalu’s statement highlights his belief that the proposed recommendations might not lead to any important improvements in the electoral process.

Odinkalu’s comments suggest a lack of confidence in INEC ability to bring about meaningful change.
