The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has clarified that the terrorist group commonly known as Boko Haram never actually claimed that Western education was forbidden, contrary to popular understanding.
Speaking during a media coverage by Arise TV from 4:46, the Sultan expressed relief that others are acknowledging what he has long known about the group’s actual name and messaging. “I am happy to hear that Boko Haram is not really Boko Haram; that’s not their name. I’m glad to hear that from somebody who is not me. If I’m the one who is saying this, somebody will say yes because I know them, and that’s not their name,” he said.
The Sultan revealed insights from audio messages he has heard from the group. “Because I know that they never claimed ‘Boko is haram.’ If you have listened to some of their audio, which I had the privilege of listening to, they didn’t say ‘Boko is haram’ because so many of them have also gone to school,” he stated.
He explained the group’s reasoning about education and their members. “And they said you cannot open somebody’s brain and remove the education in his head. So he has acquired that knowledge, that education—he’s an engineer, he’s a doctor, he’s whatever it is,” the Sultan said.
According to the traditional ruler, the group’s actual grievance centers on governance rather than education itself. “What they are saying is that those who have gone to school and are educated are leading bad governments. What they’re after is the issue of bad governance because they want to be free; they want to do whatever they feel they should do,” he said. See, More, Here>>>
