PDP Chieftain Segun Showunmi has argued that Nigeria’s pattern of frequently seeking to remove presidents from office fails to address the country’s fundamental challenges ahead of the 2027 elections.
Speaking during an interview with News Central TV from 12:59, Showunmi criticized the cycle of demanding leadership changes without giving administrations time to implement policies. “If we don’t start breaking this circle of ‘Oh, he’s not good, we want him out.’ Then Jonathan is not good; we want him out. Buhari is not good; we want him out,” he said.
The PDP chieftain warned that this approach creates dysfunction between citizens and their leaders. “What we’re going to be basically doing is that we’ll be creating citizens that are not partners with the leaders,” Showunmi stated.
He outlined what he believes opposition leaders should prioritize instead. “What the leaders need to do, in my opinion, is take care of the backline, and also taking care of the backline really means the mass of the people,” he explained.
Segun Showunmi identified a major problem with Nigeria’s current economic strategy, particularly regarding how wealth reaches ordinary citizens. He pointed out that the government is running a private sector-focused, neoliberal economic policy that creates an unresolved contradiction.
He emphasized the constitutional limits of presidential power in Nigeria’s federal structure. “The presidency of Nigeria, as permanently constituted, does not run a prefecture. A prefecture is something like the kind of thing they do in France, where the person is the president, or like a military regime where you appoint the minister, the governors, and they’re like your prefects, and this is not how it is here,” he explained.
Otunba Showunmi argued that Nigeria’s constitution envisions a different power structure that limits the President ability to influence the economy at the grassroots. See, More, Here>>>
