Reports have indicated that the crisis within the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was far from resolved. According to The Sun, while the party was finalising preparations for its national convention scheduled to hold in Ibadan, Oyo State, in November, a faction within the party, led by the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, was said to be making moves to frustrate the exercise.
Despite earlier warnings to its members about those possibly working against its plans, Wike’s group reportedly remained unfazed. He insisted that there would not be any peace in the PDP unless the South-South Zonal executives he supported received formal recognition.
The Sun reported that the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, had indicated that if Wike kept undermining the party’s collective interests, strong action would be taken against him according to the party’s constitution.
Additionally, several members of the party’s National Executive Committee, including Deputy National Youth Leader Timothy Osadolor and former National Vice Chairman for the South-West, Eddy Olafeso, accused Wike of going beyond his authority.
They emphasized that the PDP was in the process of rebuilding and would strengthen its structure through the upcoming national convention, pointing out that no individual could disrupt its internal affairs, especially with the Independent National Electoral Commission already involved.
Sources also revealed that Wike’s group is exploring legal and other options to prevent the planned convention scheduled for November.
A key member of the PDP commented, “From the very start, what we were concerned about is what seems to be happening now.”
“We were afraid of the court since the minister is part of this government.
“But as it is, we might end up in the same court because I do not see the party conceding to him (Wike) after all the ones we had made in the past.
“He (Wike) keeps making fresh demands and if we continue to accede to his demands, we might just end up handing the party over to him in the end, and that is one thing we must avoid.”
When asked to elaborate on the options he believed the FCT minister was exploring to disrupt the convention, the source explained that congresses had already commenced as a prelude to the exercise.
He alleged that the minister was deploying members of his group to stir crises in some states as part of a strategy to derail the convention.
In apparent support of this claim, the party in Cross River State was reported to be grappling with a worsening internal crisis arising from conflicting directives over the conduct of the state congress to elect a new State Working Committee (SWC). See, More, Here>>>
