Former Kaduna Central Senator Shehu Sani has strongly dismissed claims made by American comedian Bill Maher alleging that Nigeria is experiencing a deliberate “slaughter of Christians by Muslims.”
In a post shared via X on Sunday, September 28, 2025, Sani stated that violent groups in the country, including bandits and terrorists, do not operate on religious lines. He noted that both Christian and Muslim communities have been victims of widespread attacks, citing incidents where churches, pastors, and Christian worshippers were targeted, as well as mosques, imams, and Muslim worshippers.
Sani’s rebuttal followed a report on Fox News, where Maher was quoted as saying that over 100,000 Christians had been killed in Nigeria since 2009, questioning the absence of international outrage. The senator challenged the accuracy of this narrative, stressing that available records show the majority of victims are Muslims, particularly in states heavily affected by banditry and insurgency.
Recent figures by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) lend support to Sani’s position. According to the commission, at least 2,266 deaths were recorded in the first half of 2025, with fatalities cutting across both religious divides.
Sani described Maher’s comments as misleading, warning that such narratives risk inflaming sectarian tensions in a country already grappling with insecurity. He insisted that Nigeria’s violence stems largely from criminality, weak governance, and terrorism, not religious persecution. See, More, Here>>>
