Akwa Ibom State Governor Pastor Umo Eno has justified his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) as a calculated decision to protect the state’s interests at the federal level, particularly to support Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
Speaking during an interview with Arise TV from 20:08, Governor Eno emphasized the overwhelming support his decision received from elected officials in the state. “Akwa Ibom people are all on my side. We moved with 24 out of 26 House members. We moved with 30 out of 31 local government chairmen. We moved with all of the House of Representatives members. We moved with two senators. And these are representatives of the people,” he said.
The governor argued that the widespread support from elected officials demonstrates public backing for his decision. “And every day we go out, we see the people. They know, they understand why we have to move. They understand why we must be at the center,” Governor Eno stated.
He explained that having Senator Akpabio as Senate President was a key factor in his decision to switch parties. “First of all, the Senate President is from Akwa Ibom, and we need to work with him to support him, to ensure that he continues to have a voice at the federal level,” the governor said.
Governor Eno argued that remaining in opposition would be counterproductive given the state’s representation at the federal level. “We can’t be playing opposition politics when we have the number three citizen at the center. So, it’s deeper than what we see. So, I just think that it is best to be at the center to support the President, to support the Senate President, so that Akwa Ibom will be properly linked to the center. There are lots and lots of benefits that you may never understand,” he said.
Governor Eno emphasized that his decision was based on personal conviction rather than external pressure. See, More, Here>>>>
