The Grade A Customary Court in Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, has heard a case involving a couple, Abideen and Bashirat, whose marriage has broken down amid accusations of irresponsibility and threats of violence.
According to a report published by NIGERIAN TRIBUNE on Saturday, September 20, 2025, the dispute came before the court after Abideen filed for divorce, claiming that his wife was stubborn, disrespectful, and had threatened to harm him.
He asked the court to dissolve the marriage and grant him custody of their children. He argued that Bashirat constantly disobeyed him, caused public disturbances, and undermined his authority as head of the household.
Bashirat, however, strongly opposed his claims and accused her husband of failing in his duties as a provider. She maintained that she had been the one sustaining the family financially through her business.
According to her, she moved in with Abideen after becoming pregnant during their relationship, but he never fulfilled traditional obligations such as paying her bride price. She also insisted that he forced her into religious practices without prior agreement.
