Public Affairs Analyst, Majeed Dahiru, has offered a unique perspective on the political partnership between President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima, drawing on history to argue that their connection goes deeper than politics.
Speaking in an interview with The Podcast Network from 16:40, Dahiru revisited the controversy surrounding the All Progressives Congress (APC) Muslim-Muslim ticket during the 2023 elections. He explained that President Tinubu’s ancestry links back to the ancient Kanem-Borno Empire, the same historical region from which Shettima hails, suggesting that their bond is not merely political but also rooted in a shared cultural heritage.
According to Dahiru, the patriarch of the Tinubu family, Mallam Momodu Bàgarà, migrated from Borno to Lagos centuries ago. In Lagos, he married the renowned Madame Tinubu, remembered as a powerful and influential trader in Yoruba history. Although Madame Tinubu did not bear him children, Mallam Momodu was permitted to marry other wives, whose offspring carried on the Tinubu bloodline and established the family name that endures today.
By linking Tinubu’s roots to Borno, Dahiru argued that the president and his vice president share a historical connection, one that symbolically ties Lagos and Borno together through ancestry and legacy.
Dahiru noted that this ancestry makes the 2023 Tinubu-Shettima joint ticket more than a religious pairing.
In his words, he said, “If you know the history of the Tinubu family of Lagos, you would agree with me that it’s not only a Muslim-Muslim ticket.
