Chidi Odinkalu, a respected human rights activist and lawyer recently took to his official X handle to stir up a controversial debate regarding the actions of the supreme court on the petitions that trailed the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State. According to his statements, he pointed out that their refusal to even attempt a hearing on the petitions was not an omission.

The return of governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy and house of assembly members to official duties following the expiration of the state of emergency declared by President Tinubu generated mixed reactions.

The state of emergency, declared six months ago following a series of catastrophic occurrences that threatened to throw the state into anarchy, was duly petitioned, as aggrieved parties sought grounds to annul it.

However, the emergency rule lasted for the six months declared by the president, as all petitions remained untreated. This, infuriated Chidi Odinkalu, a renowned human rights lawyer and former NHRC boss.

According to the recent statements which were shared on his official X handle, he lambasted the supreme court for maintaining neutrality. He pointed out that their refusal to schedule a hearing on the constitutionality of the declaration was not an omission.

The outspoken activist, known for his bold remarks, pointed out that the silence was calculated, a self decision that will go down as infamy in the annals of history.
