Omoyele Sowore, human rights activist and former presidential candidate, has faulted Nigerian youths for prioritizing trivial events over serious political engagement.
In an interview with Symfoni from 6:02, Sowore compared Nigerian youths to their counterparts in Nepal, noting that while young people in Nepal mobilized to change their government, many Nigerian youths were busy queuing for plates of jollof rice.
He argued that this attitude shows a lack of seriousness among young Nigerians, stressing that rice or food should not distract them from demanding good governance.
In Sowore’s words: “With regards to Nepal, when it happened last week, a lot of Nigerians are always excited about something that happens elsewhere, and when it is time for them to do it in their own country, they will go and queue up to eat jollof rice, and that’s not a sign of people who are serious, I’m telling you. The number of youth in Nepal that changed the government in Nepal—probably there were about a million. The number of youth that went to queue for rice that they couldn’t get was 20,000 registered. So imagine—we need to get more serious. That’s my position. But rice does not stop anything.” Explore , More , News>>>
