According to Times of Israel, on September 11, 2025, while presenting its case before the United Nations Security Council, Qatar publicly accused Israel of intentionally undermining the Gaza ceasefire discussions by targeting Hamas leadership in Doha.
Despite the defeats, Qatar vowed to continue mediation efforts. Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani of Qatar slammed Israeli activities in a speech to the 15-member Security Council, claiming that strikes on Hamas officials in Qatar’s capital were an attempt to derail diplomatic efforts to end the Gaza conflict.
The speech by the Qatari leader comes as tensions are rising over Israeli actions outside of Gaza’s borders; Qatar has played a pivotal role in mediating ceasefire negotiations between Israeli and Hamas representatives.
In an effort to secure the release of hostages and build a lasting peace, Qatar has held multiple rounds of indirect discussions. Al-Thani made harsh comments regarding the goals of the Israeli leadership during the high-profile UN session, directly challenging their commitment to resolving the hostage problem.
“Israeli leaders had shown no regard for the lives of hostages held by Hamas in Gaza,” the prime minister informed the Security Council, implying that military actions were trumped by diplomatic alternatives that may rescue the detainees.
Qatar reiterated its unwavering dedication to mediating a peaceful resolution, in spite of the accusations and obvious aggravation with Israeli strategies.
The Gulf state has promised to keep acting as a go-between even as diplomatic avenues are being strained by the growing number of military incidents impacting its land. The intricate diplomatic obstacles surrounding the Gaza ceasefire efforts were brought to light during the Security Council debate.
Qatar has positioned itself as an ally of negotiated solutions, fighting against what it perceives as Israeli sabotage. The diplomatic efforts of the tiny but powerful Gulf state to mediate peace talks have cost a considerable amount of money.
When military actions go beyond the immediate war zone, it casts doubt on the feasibility of peace talks, which Qatar’s charges reflect. A major escalation that jeopardises the fragile equilibrium necessary for effective mediation is the targeting of Hamas leadership in Doha.
