According to a report by Vanguard on Thursday, 11 September, 2025, Goodluck Jonathan, who served as president from 2015 to 2017, has not announced his candidature for president in 2027.
The most important factor is that he is unable to settle on one of the two main opposition platforms.
Jonathan, according to sources, is conflicted over which party to support—the African Democratic Congress or the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He is postponing his official statement and sowing doubt within the opposition camp due to his reluctance to commit.
Jonathan has dedicated followers who think he should get back into the PDP so he may achieve his dream of being a party founder. According to them, the PDP’s national structure is still the most robust of all the opposition parties.
They also bring up his lengthy tenure in the party, which was a factor in his rise to power in the past. Concurrently, the ADC has grown in popularity. After a recent leadership shakeup, the party is trying to establish itself as a serious contender in the national political arena.
Some of Jonathan’s former associates are now very important figures at the ADC. It is their hope that he will utilise the site to announce his return to the sport in 2027. The insider claims that Jonathan is now facing a predicament because of this. Both sides’ supporters are putting pressure on him to make a choice.
Party faithfulness is the basis for the PDP leaders’ plea to him. The leaders of the ADC are giving him a level playing field where there are less internal rivalries. Delaying his official declaration for the presidency, the former president can’t make up his mind on which platform to run on among the major opposition political parties.
He further stated that some officials in the PDP (of which Jonathan is a founding member) and the newly formed ADC want him to use their platforms to achieve his political ambitions in 2027, adding to the complexity surrounding the former president.
