Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has called on the international community to adopt a firm, united front against terrorism, invoking America’s response to the September 11, 2001 attacks as a model. Speaking during a commemoration tied to the 24th anniversary of 9/11, Netanyahu emphasized that Israel faces a similar battle following the October 7, 2023 assault by Hamas.
“What did America do in the wake of September 11th? It promised to hunt down the terrorists who committed this heinous crime wherever they may be,” Netanyahu said. He reminded his audience that two weeks after the attacks, the United Nations Security Council unanimously passed a resolution declaring that no government should provide safe haven to terrorists. “That principle is as true today as it was then,” he stressed.
The prime minister argued that the same international resolve that guided the United States and its allies two decades ago must now be directed against groups like Hamas and Hezbollah. He insisted that harboring or enabling terrorist organizations undermines global peace and security. “Terrorism is not a local problem, it is a global threat. Those who finance, shelter, or excuse it must be held accountable,” Netanyahu added.
His remarks come as Israel intensifies its campaign in Gaza and continues to confront rocket fire from Hezbollah across its northern border. Netanyahu framed Israel’s struggle as part of the broader global fight against radical Islamist movements, warning that complacency would only embolden extremists.
The comparison to 9/11 was deliberate and pointed. Netanyahu has frequently linked Israel’s October 7 tragedy — which saw more than 1,200 people killed and hundreds taken hostage — to the trauma of 9/11. By doing so, he aims to reinforce Israel’s bond with the United States and highlight the universality of counterterrorism efforts.
In Washington, President Joe Biden marked the anniversary of 9/11 with solemn ceremonies, reiterating America’s enduring commitment to fight terror networks. Netanyahu’s alignment with U.S. rhetoric reflects his long-standing strategy of framing Israel’s security challenges within the same context as America’s post-9/11 “war on terror.”
However, critics argue that Israel’s military response has raised humanitarian concerns, particularly in Gaza, where thousands of civilians have been displaced. Human rights groups warn that international law requires proportionality, even when combating terrorism. Netanyahu, meanwhile, maintains that Israel’s actions are both lawful and necessary, rooted in the same principles that guided the United States after 9/11.
Closing his remarks, Netanyahu urged world leaders to stand firm. “The lesson of 9/11 is clear: no sanctuary for terror, no compromise with evil. Israel will continue to defend itself, and we call on the nations of the world to uphold the same standard.”
