The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has once again drawn attention to the disturbing realities of sexual violence and the conflicting emotions that sometimes surround it.
On Monday, the Command’s spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, shared on her verified X handle an unusual experience she had while on duty. According to her, a young lady had called to report that her boyfriend had raped her. In the course of the conversation, the victim suddenly pleaded that although she wanted him arrested, he should not be kept in detention for too long because she still loved him.
Adeh noted that the incident underscored how complex human emotions can be, but she stressed that the law was very clear: rape is a crime and must never be mistaken for an act of romance. She emphasized that no matter the feelings a victim might have for the perpetrator, sexual assault is a serious offence and justice must take its full course.
The police spokesperson further urged victims of sexual violence, or anyone aware of such cases, to promptly report to the authorities. She assured that the police would handle such matters with the utmost seriousness and confidentiality, while reiterating that love or personal attachment should never become an excuse to trivialize a criminal offence.
She wrote, “A lady called me, begging: ‘Officer, please arrest my boyfriend, he raped me… but wait o, I still love him, don’t lock him for too long!’
“Love is truly complicated, but let’s be clear: rape is a crime, not romance. No matter how you feel about someone, the law must take its course.
