Boko Haram militants launched a deadly nighttime assault on Dara-Jamal village in Borno State, killing dozens of residents and destroying over two dozen homes in the latest attack on the recently resettled community.

A village resident, speaking anonymously to Channels TV due to security concerns, described the terrifying moments when insurgents stormed their community under cover of darkness. “We suddenly heard ‘Allahu Akbar,’ then gunshots everywhere while we locked ourselves up in our rooms. They came and found us. They said, ‘These are old men. Let them be.’ Then they burned our houses,” the resident recounted.

Bama Local Government Chairman Modu Gujia confirmed the scale of destruction, revealing that the attack displaced over 100 residents while causing significant property damage.

According to Gujia, more than 28 houses were burned during the assault, forcing residents to flee the community they had only recently returned to after years in displacement camps.

Following the attack, the governor led a high-level delegation to assess the damage and coordinate response efforts. The entourage included members of the National and State Assemblies, State Executive Council members, Civilian Joint Task Force volunteers, and Combined Task Force security personnel.

The delegation called on the federal government to strengthen security arrangements in the area, mirroring state-level efforts to protect vulnerable border communities.

In response to ongoing threats, the state government announced the commencement of forest guard training programs designed to enhance community protection.

Over 240 forest guards are currently undergoing training to help defend the community, with the state engaging young people from the local area to serve in these protective roles.

The government is also reviewing operational frameworks for repentant insurgents and Civilian Joint Task Force volunteers, who have played crucial roles in counterinsurgency operations throughout Borno State.
