Lauretta Onochie, a former aide to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari and a strong voice within the opposition coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has expressed optimism about the future of Nigeria’s political landscape.
According to a report by Vanguard on Monday, September 8, 2025, Onochie projected that by May 2027, the country would witness the emergence of a new president, stressing that the people’s votes would play a decisive role in shaping that outcome.
Onochie drew a parallel between the anticipated 2027 elections and the watershed moment of 2015, when the electorate demonstrated the power of their votes in effecting change at the national level. According to her, just as the political tides shifted in 2015, the same energy would resurface in 2027, ensuring that citizens have a genuine say in who governs them.
She dismissed ongoing narratives that suggest otherwise, describing them as psychological warfare designed to weaken the resolve of Nigerians and discourage their active involvement in the democratic process. She emphasized that such tactics are meant to instill fear and resignation among the electorate, making them believe their participation holds no value. Onochie countered this by reaffirming that the determination of the people will prevail.
She argued that the opposition coalition is not only ready to mobilize Nigerians but also prepared to challenge the ruling establishment, signaling a tough contest ahead. According to her, the ADC and its allies will not back down but rather intensify efforts to strengthen democracy, restore faith in the electoral system, and ensure that every vote truly counts.
She concluded with a bold declaration that they would give the ruling class a run for their money, leaving no doubt that the opposition is gearing up for a fierce political battle as 2027 approaches.
She said: “There will be a new President in May 2027. Votes will count in 2027, just as they did in 2015. It’s nothing but psychological warfare aimed at discouraging Nigerians from active participation in our democracy. We will give them a run for their money.”
