Governor of Kaduna State, Senator Uba Sani, has reiterated his support for the establishment of state police in Nigeria, describing it as a positive development that would enhance security across the country.

Speaking on TVC News Politics on Sunday from 14:42, September 7, 2025, the governor recalled that he had previously sponsored a bill for state police during his time in the National Assembly, even before becoming governor.

“Thank you very much. I think, you see, when I brought the issue of state police when I was in the National Assembly, I was not a governor of my state at that time. And a lot of people were showing a lot of concern. But today I’m happy. At the level of the NEC meeting, virtually all the governors in Nigeria, except one, have agreed to the establishment of state police in Nigeria. For me, it is a good development, a positive development,” he said.

While acknowledging fears that state police could be abused by governors for political purposes, Sani dismissed such concerns as misconceptions rooted in a poor understanding of Nigeria’s lawmaking process.

“A lot of people are skeptical that governors will use state police. But a lot of people have no idea about the establishment of law in Nigeria. Because as a lawmaker, when I was in the National Assembly, I sponsored over 32 bills. Seven were passed. Three became laws in Nigeria. And I’m talking about laws that were very, very critical and important in Nigeria,” he explained.

The Kaduna governor emphasized that the National Assembly would be responsible for amending the constitution to provide for state police and that the potential for abuse could be curtailed at the drafting stage.

“So the issue of abuse can be addressed during the amendment of the constitution. We can make it clear that the state police only focus on the issue of security and you don’t give them the room to get involved with the issue of politics or political activities. When you do that, it depends on how you craft or draft the law,” Sani stressed.

He also highlighted the urgent need for more security personnel across the country, pointing to longstanding manpower shortages in the armed forces and the police.

“Whether we like it or not, like I said many years ago when I was in the National Assembly, just about three years ago, we had lacking boots on ground. That is why both the military, the army, the air force, the police, have accepted the fact that they are lacking boots on ground,” he added.
