“We became closer in exile from 1995 to 1998,” Momodu revealed, highlighting a significant period of camaraderie while they were away from Nigeria. Upon their return from England, Tinubu’s political career soared as he served as Lagos State Governor for two consecutive terms, a tenure marked by transformative governance that secured his influence in Lagos for over 26 years.
Despite this proximity, Momodu chose a different path from Tinubu’s political inner circle. Instead of joining what he described as Tinubu’s “band of acolytes,” Momodu focused on building a global media brand, relying on a modest income sustained by dedication and divine favor. This decision, he believes, has been crucial in maintaining his independence and integrity.
Crucially, Momodu’s message to the president is grounded in friendship and patriotism. While he emphasizes having no personal grievance against Tinubu, he insists that a genuine friend must speak truthfully. “He cannot hold Nigeria by the jugular like he did in Lagos,” Momodu cautioned, urging the president to rely on his proven achievements rather than leveraging federal power to secure a second term.
This appeal underscores a broader call for democratic values and fair governance. Momodu insists that Tinubu should “sell his achievements to deserve a second term,” rather than employing “direct and subterranean Federal might.”
