A sudden dog attack can be frightening, and your first instinct may be to run or scream. However, running can trigger a dog’s chasing instinct and make the situation worse. If a dog approaches you aggressively, try to stay calm and follow these steps.

1. Stay Still And Avoid Running

If the dog is approaching you, stop moving and stand as still as you can. Keep your arms close to your body and avoid turning your back on the dog. Running may encourage the dog to chase you.

2. Avoid Staring Directly Into Its Eyes

Do not challenge the dog with prolonged direct eye contact. Instead, keep the dog in your peripheral vision while looking slightly away. This can help you appear less threatening.

3. Use A Firm, Calm Voice

If the dog continues approaching, use a firm but calm voice and say something simple such as “No” or “Go home.” Avoid screaming, shrieking or making sudden movements.

4. Put Something Between You And The Dog

If the dog moves toward you aggressively, place an object such as a bag, backpack, bicycle or jacket between yourself and the animal. The object can act as a barrier and give you some protection.

5. If You Fall, Protect Your Head And Neck

If the dog knocks you down, curl into a ball and protect your head, neck and face with your arms. Try to remain as still and quiet as possible until the dog moves away.
