A prominent leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed confidence that the party would secure a decisive electoral victory if former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party’s Peter Obi were to rejoin the opposition party.
During a recent interview on Signature TV, PDP chieftain Segun Sowunmi made bold predictions about the potential impact of such political realignments on future elections.
When asked by the interviewer about the possibility of both politicians returning to the PDP, Sowunmi stated: “If both of them return to the PDP, the election will be over by 12 noon, and PDP would have won. There is nothing in the APC that will be able to overwhelm the kinds of energy that will be displayed if that happens.”
However, Sowunmi expressed skepticism about the likelihood of such a scenario materializing, adding: “But will it happen? I doubt it.
The interview explored the potential for PDP’s revival, with the interviewer posing the question: “Suppose Atiku chooses to return to the mother party, suppose he chooses to return. Suppose Peter Obi chooses to return my question: Do you think your diagnosis, your prognosis of PDP may not win the election, but it will have reinvented itself. Do you think PDP could be in a position to win?”
When pressed about what factors might prevent either Atiku or Obi from returning to a party that could potentially win elections, Sowunmi adopted a diplomatic tone, stating: “I know this men. With respect to both of them, I don’t like to criticise them unless people try to irritate me, I don’t really like to criticize them. But I will not also refuse to put positions on the table because they are big voices.”
The comments come amid ongoing discussions about political realignments ahead of future elections, with various opposition figures exploring potential collaborations to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
