According to a report by Leadership News on Monday, September 1, 2025, Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has openly declared his confidence in President Bola Tinubu’s chances of securing re-election in 2027.
He expressed his firm belief that the president will retain power and even stated that he was willing to bet on Tinubu’s victory when the next general election comes around.
The assurance by Wike was made in reaction to a statement credited to former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, who had suggested that President Tinubu might face difficulties in the 2027 polls.
El-Rufai had hinted at the possibility of the ruling party encountering setbacks, but Wike dismissed such predictions, saying the political climate has already taken a new direction.
Wike stressed that Nigeria’s political environment has shifted significantly since the 2023 presidential election.
According to him, the changes across political structures and alliances will play a major role in determining the outcome of the next contest.
He maintained that President Tinubu has built stronger ground since assuming office, which he believes will count heavily in his favour.
The minister also pointed out that the opposition parties do not currently pose the same level of threat they did in 2023.
He made particular reference to the Labour Party and its candidate, Peter Obi, who polled over six million votes in the last election.
Wike noted that while Obi had a strong showing previously, the situation is no longer the same.
In his remarks, Wike insisted that Peter Obi will not be a major factor in the 2027 presidential race.
He said the momentum that propelled Obi during the last election has reduced, and new realities within the country’s politics will weaken his chances against the incumbent.
He added that he was confident of Tinubu’s ability to secure wider support.
The former Rivers State governor further explained that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has positioned itself more effectively since taking office, making it difficult for opposition groups to gather enough strength to unseat it.
He underlined the fact that political alliances are dynamic and tend to shift with time, which he believes will continue to favour President Tinubu.
Wike’s remarks underline his alignment with the president and his readiness to back Tinubu’s re-election bid.
By dismissing doubts about 2027 and downplaying the chances of key opposition figures, he has once again restated his loyalty to the incumbent and his optimism that the political balance will remain in Tinubu’s favour.
He said: “Let me tell you, in 2027, Peter Obi will not be a threat to President Tinubu. I know what I am saying. Peter Obi had over six million votes in 2023, but the political dynamics will be different in 2027.
