Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Media and Publicity, Bayo Onanuga, has fired back at former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, following his claim that Tinubu could finish third in the 2027 presidential election.
Reacting in a post on X on Monday, September 1, 2025, Onanuga accused El-Rufai of contradiction, pointing out that the former governor himself once admitted that four years was insufficient for any political leader to effect meaningful change.
“Nasir El-Rufai confesses here that four years is not enough for a political office holder to make ‘meaningful changes’. Yet he is at the forefront of the gang of political desperados plotting President Tinubu’s ouster, just two years into his tenure. What a contradiction!” Onanuga wrote.
He contrasted El-Rufai and other with what he described as “political laggards and underachievers” referring to Peter Obi who had governed Anambra, Amaechi who had governed Rivers, and El rufai who had governed Kaduna States, stressing that Tinubu had delivered significant progress in just two years.
“In contrast to the political laggards and underachievers who were once governors in Anambra, Rivers and Kaduna, President Tinubu and his team have implemented meaningful changes in our country over the past two years, positioning us on the path of prosperity,” Onanuga stated.
Listing the administration’s achievements, he said: “The positive indicators are all there for the world to see—for example, increased foreign reserves, the highest in 44 months. Phenomenal wealth creation in the stock market has seen ASI skyrocket from 53,000 points to over 140,000 points. Over N26 trillion in additional wealth has been created in the market under Tinubu’s watch.
The exchange rate has been harmonised, and arbitrage eliminated. Investment inflow has increased. The inflation rate has decreased in four successive months. GDP has grown by N103.5 trillion in two years. And it is still growing. Balance of payment surplus is being recorded quarter after quarter. Indigent students are being supported by a revolutionary loan policy, using NELFUND as the vehicle. Vulnerable Nigerians are receiving cash from the Humanitarian Ministry.
National revenue has increased phenomenally, and the record will be broken again this year and even next year when the revolutionary tax reform is implemented. States and local councils are receiving more money from the centre, enabling them to embark on capital projects, creating more jobs. The governors said they have never had it so good.”
Onanuga concluded his remarks with a stern warning to what he described as “power-hungry politicians,” vowing that their efforts to undermine Tinubu would not succeed.
“Yet, these power-hungry politicians want the President, who has achieved so much, to be removed, all because they have become politically displaced and irrelevant. May they never succeed in their plot against our nation and people. Please save the video. We shall confront Nasir with it when electioneering starts,” he wrote.
