‎The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has raised concerns about the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) plan to consider former President Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate for 2027, as reported by Vanguard on Sunday, 31 August, 2025.

‎Keyamo explained that the issue is not about Jonathan’s popularity, but about the Constitution.

‎He said the law may prevent Jonathan from contesting again because he has already been sworn in twice as president.

‎Jonathan first completed the tenure of the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua in 2010.

‎He was later sworn in for his own term after winning the 2011 election.

‎Keyamo stressed that the Fourth Amendment to the 1999 Constitution introduced a clear restriction.

‎The section states that no one who has been sworn in twice can seek another term.

‎According to him, this poses a serious danger for the PDP.

‎If Jonathan is nominated and later barred by the Supreme Court, the party could be left without any presidential candidate at all.

‎He warned that this could happen after the deadline for substitution has passed, leaving the opposition stranded.

‎Keyamo noted that many arguments have been raised about whether the constitutional clause applies to Jonathan.

‎However, he insisted that the final decision will not be made on social media or in political debates but in court.

‎“One of its attractive targets as a Presidential candidate is ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, because of his purported eligibility to run for only one term. But, if he is fielded, the Party runs the risk of not having a candidate at all by virtue of section 137 (3) of the 1999 Constitution (Fourth Amendment),” he noted.
