In a recent interview shared by News Central TV from 5:40, Senior Political Assistant to Atiku Abubakar, Demola Olarewaju, described the last general election as the most difficult campaign for the former vice president.
According to him, Atiku faced strong resistance from some of his long-time allies in the South. Olarewaju said this was the first time such opposition came from people who had previously worked closely with him.
He explained, “The last election was the most difficult for Atiku, because never before had his candidacy been so heavily opposed by his former allies in the South. He has always stood for southern interests, but when it was his turn, ethnic sentiments prevailed.”
Olarewaju further noted that despite the challenges, Atiku still managed to win in 12 states and secured almost seven million votes. He insisted that the setback was not due to lack of popularity, but rather because the opposition failed to unite behind a single candidate.
He stressed that Atiku’s long-standing support for the South shows his commitment to national unity. Olarewaju also argued that regional politics and ethnic sentiments should not determine leadership, pointing out that what Nigerians need is a capable leader with clear ideas.
He concluded that Atiku remains committed to rescuing Nigeria from its current challenges and will continue to pursue his presidential ambition as long as he is fit and healthy.
