Reports stated that in what appeared to be a careful balancing of political tactics, leaders of the two major opposition parties, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the coalition platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), made different statements on Monday regarding their 2027 presidential tickets.

According to The Guardian, it was noted that the PDP’s pronouncement came less than 24 hours after its 2023 presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar—who had since defected to the ADC—announced that he would again participate in the 2027 presidential race.

Atiku was said to have dismissed claims that he was unprepared for the contest, insisting that Nigeria needed an experienced leader to steer its affairs and rescue the nation from what he described as a critical state.

Commenting on the broader implications of the rivalry between the PDP and ADC, Senator Emmanuel Onwe reportedly remarked that Atiku’s declaration, and his insistence on placing personal ambition above national interest, was neither surprising nor encouraging.

He stated: “To say this about a man I respect deeply and consider his politics in alliance with mine is a great deal for me.

“When Atiku ran for the PDP primary against President Goodluck Jonathan in 2011, I was the only sitting Senator from the South East who voted for him, because a number of issues of national transcendence were on the table and I was fully confident that he was better prepared than Jonathan to competently and courageously deal with them.”

He stated that both the country and Atiku had moved on, stressing that national priorities had changed. He added that, at 78 years of age now and 81 by the time the 2027 presidency would begin, he did not believe Atiku was the right person to confront the pressing and urgent national challenges.
