Former presidential candidate and PDP chieftain, Gbenga Olawepo Hashim, has recalled how political resistance against General Sani Abacha’s regime emerged even when all five political parties at the time had adopted him as their sole candidate.
Speaking in an interview with Channels TV, Hashim highlighted the courage of the late Alhaji MD Yusuf, whom he described as a patriot willing to stand up against military imposition. “Abacha created five parties and all the five parties adopted Abacha. So, but did Abacha become president? Now, but even under that circumstance, we had a patriot, Alhaji MD Yusuf, he was in GDM and he said, ‘I’m a member of GDM. I’m waiting for Abacha to come to GDM national convention. I’m going to contest against him,’” he recounted.
Hashim further revealed that he and other political figures often met at Yusuf’s office in Banex Plaza to discuss these bold moves. “A number of time we will meet at his office in Banex Plaza,” he added.
The PDP chieftain used the example to stress that even in seemingly hopeless political climates, there were individuals who dared to challenge authoritarian power.
