According to a report by Leadership News on Monday, August 25, 2025, Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has expressed deep concern about Nigeria’s current trajectory, declaring that he is in a hurry to see the country reach its full potential before the end of his lifetime.

The elder statesman, who has consistently been vocal about Nigeria’s governance challenges, said he is now “getting close” to his departure lounge, emphasizing the urgency he feels about the nation’s progress.

In a candid assessment of the administration of President Bola Tinubu, Obasanjo did not mince words.

He accused the government of poor performance, drawing a sharp comparison with that of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

According to him, “Only Bola Tinubu’s administration seems to be competing with Buhari’s (in the area of inefficiency) for now.”

His statement highlights growing criticism of the government’s policies, which many argue have yet to provide the needed relief for ordinary Nigerians.

Attempts by journalists to secure an official response from the presidency proved unsuccessful.

Calls and messages sent to the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, and to the Minister of Information, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, were not acknowledged as of the time of reporting.

Reflecting on his own journey, Obasanjo said he had given much of his life to Nigeria and would leave his legacy to history.

He recalled serving the nation in several roles, including his time as a military leader and later as a democratically elected president.

He also mentioned his experience of imprisonment during military rule, which he described as part of the sacrifices he made for Nigeria.

“Yes, I am both angry and sad because I have seen the best and the worst of our country. With hindsight, we know we made some mistakes, but again we did some great things in our country, for our country and for Africa,” Obasanjo stated.

He emphasized that while he acknowledges errors made along the way, his administration and those before him also achieved remarkable progress in advancing Nigeria’s interests at home and across Africa.

He maintained that posterity would ultimately judge his leadership fairly.
